As babies become more familiar with the sippy cups and bottles, they can be swapped out for Latch or Latch-brand sippy cups. For pumping moms, Latch brand pump adapters will also fit directly onto this cup. These interchangeable features could help offset some cost with these sippies, which run about $8-10 per 4 ounce cup. For babies breastfed exclusively, the silicone spout in accordion shape moves along with them as they drink. Munchkin Latch features an anticolic vale inside. This breaks up gas bubbles after feedings, reducing fussiness and gas. The Latch sippy cup has a slower flow rate than other options. Some children had difficulties drinking the Latch. The parents also tried it, but they were not sure if this sippy was meant for babies older than six months. Latch cup parents liked that the handles could be removed and that the lid snaps tightly to the bottom of the cover provides extra diaper bag protection. Munchkin claims this cup is spill-proof because of its snug-fitted lid. The flexible spout is resistant to bumps and shakes. While the Latch does leak as any soft-spouted sippycup, however, this is minimal in comparison to soft-spout models.
While this BPA-free sippy can is top-rack dishwasher friendly, test parents were concerned about its unique features and how easy they are to clean. Specifically, the flexible spout and the anti-colic valve, both of which set this cup apart from many others. All cup pieces must be disassembled for effective cleaning; this includes the anti-colic valve. While we were successful at reassembling the cup with a leak-tight seal, test parents agreed the constant pulling on this piece created concern for longevity before the valve became distorted or otherwise damaged. The customization of this cup and its popularity among test children younger than 5 years old was impressive. For babies six months and over, the sippy lets them drink directly from the edge of their cup just like they would a regular cup. This cup’s bottom tumbler has a beveled shape that lends it a sophisticated look while still being easy to hold. Cheers 360 can be purchased in either pink or blue tones. You have the option of a 7 or 10 ounce volume. These prices range from $6 for a small Cheers 360 to $9 to buy two larger Cheers 360 tumblers. While the 7-ounce model has easy-grip handles that attach to the cover, the 10-ounce model does not. Spill-proof cups are solid when tipped. Some leaking or splattering can occur if the cup is dropped, shook and/or dropped. This happens most often with young children. Similar to the Munchkin Miracle 360, the two-piece cup cover looks the same as the Munchkin Miracle 360. However, the Dr. Brown models come with clear gaskets. Both parents and babies loved them.
The clear cup allowed babies to look inside the cup, which encouraged them to sip. Parents also liked the transparent top. This 6+ month sippy recommendation was a bit of a toss-up between the NUK Learner and the Nuby No-Spill Super Spout . Each cup had a soft silicone tip for sensitive gums and each one had its own leak issues despite no spill promises. Our recognition of the fact that any one of these cups is only a temporary step towards other, better-designed and more dental-friendly options gave the NUK Learninger an edge. Babies are sometimes timid about new drink vessels. One of our baby testers was a big fanof the NUK Learner. It was his only choice. The Learner, according to NUK, is made to look like a sippy cup. These are great for babies who need assistance in making the switch from bottles to sippy cups. It is affordable at $8 for a single 5 oz. NUK Learner. There are removable handles, and the cover keeps the spout clean. Though the handles are very well designed with an anti-slip coating and soft grip, they can easily pop off. BPA and top-rack dishwasher safe. You can easily separate the cups into three pieces.
The spout fits snugly to the cup, which we really like. Soft, textured silicone is used to make the NUK Learner’s spout. It is also flatter than Nuby models. Babies will be able to use other sippies and eventually, regular cups. It is possible for older infants to still drink from this sippy. However, the spout would collapse when they tried it. This created enough space between the spout and the collar for a steady drip to make a pretty big mess. Because of this, test parents agreed there is a functional age limit of probably 7 or 8 months for this sippy before its slow-flow loses adequacy for baby’s drinking needs. This spoutless cup is similar to Dr. Brown’s Cheers 360. It is recommended for babies aged 6 months or older. The Miracle 360 is a three-piece design, made from BPA-free materials. The sippy cups come in packs of 2 and are available in many colors. There are two volume options: 7 ounce cups that have built-in handles at the rim and 10 ounce tumblers without handles. The prices for each size range from $13 to about $13. Optional lids are available for added spill protection. These cups were tested and passed both the upside-down shaking and tipping tests better than Dr. Brown’s. However, that did not stop the test children from testing the boundaries literally. A 2-year-old test infant discovered that pressing down on the gasket releases the seal, allowing liquid to leak out. We tried this with Dr. Brown’s 360 after seeing the trick in action. The model stood up. The gasket material on the Munchkin 360 seems a bit more durable, but cleaning is a bit more complicated. Top-rack dishwasher safe. To ensure thorough cleaning, you must remove the gasket. There is a lot of plastic on the top layer, so mold can grow. Manufacturers recommend that you grasp the heart tab located in the center to pull the gasket out. This should release the metal rim underneath the hard-plastic button. However, this is easier said than done (especially with wet hands). Instead, test parents agreed the easiest way to remove the gasket was to slide a finger under the rim edge and pull from there. This puts extra stress on the thin gasket material and can lead to breakage. Additionally, there is a small plastic ring around the inside of the lid; this ring forms a seal when the cover is screwed onto the tumbler base. While the ring seals well and is easily removed, this cup requires more care than the Dr. Brown model that does not have an inner ring. So, what this sippy offers in durability, dental-friendliness, and spill avoidance, it costs in cleaning and maintenance. Munchkin also makes Miracle 360 cups in a range of styles. It’s ideal for babies 6+ months old who are already using Dr. Brown’s Options bottles. You can start by using the silicone handle of your Options wide neck bottles or on the included one, then move to the spout as needed. The handles will teach your toddler how to grasp the bottle and how to use the spout. It also slips easily on the bottles, meaning you will probably only need one or two. Simply remove the vent from your Options bottles and slide the sleeves on. Finally, you can attach the spout cap. Easy! They were a little difficult to package because of the tight plastic shell you needed to take off and the paper instructions that had been folded down inside the bottle. You should have long tweezer or scissors on hand to help get the contents out. It was very enjoyable to use this spout container. The toddlers who tested it had some issues, though one did get a bit confused by the high-flow spout. Although the bottle didn’t leak when it was tipped over it did leak quite a lot if placed upside-down, this wasn’t surprising. We were able to top-rack dishwash these, and they are BPA free, so the heat wasn’t a huge concern. The sippy cup is not actually a sippy and requires a similar latching/suckling procedure to a bottle napkin than a sippy. This could theoretically make it a two-stage transition, from sippy cup to bottle with a stop at the middle for the spout cup. However, we aren’t sure that this order is correct given the flow of this spout. All of these are fine. However, it is important to confirm before purchasing. This straw cup is suitable for babies and toddlers over 6 months. The average price is $6 for one cup; a two pack is $11.50. Sippy is 7 ounces in capacity and available in three color options: blue, orange and green (two-packs have blue and green). To make sipping easy even for kids who are tilting their heads, the straw cup features a user-friendly design. This feature is very similar to the straw system used in the 8 ounce b.box Sippy Cup (below) but is available for half the price. The straw’s weighted base moves along with the cup. Additionally, the straw’s upper section has split-seal technology to retain liquids. For extra flexibility and cleaning, the sippy included a twistable toothbrush. Our test parents enjoyed the click-lock feature on this cup for that extra security, though some had a hard time both locking and unlocking the cover. Although the straw flow rate was good, it was slower than models such as Nuby Flex Straw (below). This sippy cup did not leak despite being dropped, dropped, jostled, shaken, or even turned upside down. For babies 6 months old and older, this sippy cup can be used. Children as young and old as three were tested and enjoyed using the sippy cup. The flip-top was easy to open and shut. Younger babies liked being able turn the cup around and drink, but it was nearly impossible to open the flip-top. These sippy cups are perfect for babies’ little hands. The handles can be removed, but they don’t fit well in most diaper bags. Munchkin also makes a 10-ounce, weighted and handle-free 10 oz straw cup. The straw and sippy cups are BPA-free and dishwasher-safe. However, parents tend to think that the cup is best for drinking water due to its narrow, narrow design. Why Baby Bottles Should Be Discontinued
American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents eliminate baby bottles and sippy cup use when their babies turn 12 to 24 months. The effects of sippy cups and baby bottles on speech and swallowing can be detrimental after the infant’s first year.
The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) observes, “A bottle nipple rests over the front third of the tongue, preventing that essential elevation so necessary for being an effective and efficient eater. When toddlers continue to use the infant swallow pattern, chewing and swallowing new foods can be challenging or messy at best.” This tongue-forward positioning can also negatively impact the development of jaw muscles and other physical complications, making it even more important that parents begin the weaning process from the bottle and toward regular drinking cups.
Sippy cups are a better option than bottles because they allow children to feel more independent. When babies drink from bottles, their intrinsic latch and suckle produces the flow they need to drink. With many sippy cup models, however, babies will begin to learn cause and effect, expanding their understanding for control and self-sufficiency. Children must maintain their own flow with bottles that have straws, particularly vertical versions like the Nuby Flex Straw. Drinking from 360 style cups with controlled tipping will help regulate the flow rate and reduce neck/jaw flexing. You should be patient and supportive of your baby’s self-confidence once you have started transitioning. You can buy sippy cups with high quality and meet your child’s developmental and health standards, and then start serving them during meals. Our toddlers preferred the sippy cups when transitioning. All daytime bottles should be stopped from the morning until babies become comfortable drinking through their mealtime sippy. AAP advises parents to take time with children during this transition. Children may need to adjust for a few weeks to become comfortable with the new routine. This is a time when children are most comfortable with the routine. You might want to leave this for last.
Modern parents have enough on their plates without needing to wash every sippy cup by hand, which is why our test parents agreed that dishwasher-friendly cups were most preferred. Our top priorities included safety concerns for the materials. Sippy cups are overwhelmingly made of plastic. Although the handles are helpful for starting, the handle can be a hassle when trying to pack a diaper bag and fit the sippy into the stroller cup holders. Our biggest concern stemmed from the way babies love to move. You don’t just call them toddlers. As we mentioned, independence can sometimes lead to falls. A 2010 study by the AAP found that 2270 children suffered injuries from falling while drinking out of sippy cups or bottles. These injuries included 14.3% of sippy cup accidents. Our test baby’s sippy cup had handles which made it easier to drink and move. The handles on sippy cups such as the NUK Learner, or the Munchkin Latch were removed by our test babies and they were much more inclined to take a sip.
