What is the best time for a child to transition from crib to bed?
It all depends on each child. The majority of children move to a bigger bed at around the age of 2. Moving from a crib to a bed is a huge transition for little ones that can result in night wandering, new fears, and new insecurities. Avoid making the move during major transitions like potty-training, preschool start, moving or the birth of a baby. This will make it easier for the child to transition smoothly. Toddlers are faced with many transitions as they grow. Children feel a great deal of pressure to “grow-up”. You should only focus on one big milestone at a given time to keep toddlers from being overwhelmed by too many changes at once.
Then, of course, there’s the issue of safety. The transition from the crib into a bed should be timed, because little climbers are very likely to find their way out. It’s often best to wait until your child is closer to 3, since many little ones just aren’t ready to make the transition. Of course, you’ll need to move your toddler to a bed when he’s simply too big or too active to sleep in a crib anymore.
Because their toddler is active, many parents switch to a crib because it’s feared that he might jump or climb out of his crib. You should not let your toddler react to the possibility of climbing out from his crib or to any sudden problem that might arise during sleep.
Don’t rush right out and buy a new bed the day your toddler first climbs out of the crib. He might not want to go to bed. And it may not make him feel comfortable being out of his crib at night. Save yourself time. Lower the crib mattress to the lowest possible height. The side rails will be more challenging and higher.
Another reason parents make the switch to a bed is the impending arrival of another baby. You should make this switch between six and eight weeks in advance of your baby’s due date. Be sure your toddler is comfortable and settled in “his” new bed before the baby moves into it. Consider delaying the change until the toddler turns 3, 4 or 6 months. This will depend on their age. You will likely spend the months of your baby’s life in a bassinet, so it is not unusual for them to sleep there. This will allow time for toddler to adapt to their new baby and make the transition from a crib to a bed much easier.
It is better to decide when your child will be ready to switch to a bed than to do so because you don’t have to take up space in the crib. Many parents discover that it is easier to rent or purchase a crib than to move an older child to a different bed.
Some children adjust readily to this change, while others have a hard time with it. Every child is different. It’s not unusual, though, for firstborn children to resist the transition. He may be very attached to his crib and all of his associations with it. Moving to a bed for sleep is one of the many transitions in toddler life. This stage may be accompanied by toilet-training and starting preschool. A new baby may be coming and your child could feel the need to have all his things. It is easier for older children to move to a new bed than younger siblings. Their desire to change from the “for babies” crib into a “big kid bed is what drives them.
