Best Fountain Pens For Beginners
A good quality fountain pen doesn’t necessarily have to cost a lot. For less than $10, you can have a great experience with writing.
TWSBI ECO . Although some may not like the idea of recommending a piston-filler in my “beginner fountain pen” recommendations list, the TWSBI Eco package is the most affordable at only $32.99. You can’t go wrong by the ECO. TWSBI added more colors to the ECO line over the years. They also introduced pens with rose-gold trim. Lamy Safari is available to purchase here Lamy Safari is my favourite hobby. The German pen giant has created the Safari, a “beginner pen”, that is versatile and features a unique design that’s been a timeless classic. If the triangular section doesn’t bother you, the Safari (or its aluminum cousin, the AL-Star ) are both great options. ( Purchase here Platinum Plaisir . Pilot raised the Metropolitan’s price, so the Platinum Plaisir has been my recommendation. This comes in more colors than the Metropolitan and features a better nib. Also, the Platinum Plaisir is easier to use and holds well. Platinum’s converters must be purchased individually. However, Platinum’s cartridges with high-capacity are great and will last you a lot of time. Kaweco Sport is available for purchase. Kaweco makes great pocket pens. Kaweco has a range of Sport pens, including a classic model and a more pricey AL-Sport Carbon Fiber AC-Sport. PenBBS 308 has the Classic Sport and Skyline Sport models with gold trim.
PenBBS were added to my recommendations for beginners pens last year. Although I prefer the cartridge/converter option, I’d avoid using their more complicated filling systems like bulkfiller or magnet filler. PenBBS fountain pens come in a wide variety of colors and materials, and the cost ranges from $13 to $30, depending on the material you choose. Buy here Honorable Mention. There are many quality, affordable pens that could break into the Top Five. It’s hard to go wrong when you check out the Pilot Kakuno and Kaweco Perkeo BWBI GO Platinum Preppy. Recommendations are also being made for the recently released Platinum Prefounte.
Best Fountain Pens Under $100
It is the hardest price range to recommend. If you are willing to pay $50 for a pen you might be better off going to the $100-$150 price category. You will get more choices and, most likely, have a higher quality writing experience. You can still find top-quality fountain pens under $100 if you shop around. They are not for beginner’s, and don’t break your bank.
TWSBI 580 TWSBI 580 remains the leader in this segment. TWSBI conceived the 580 with input from larger fountain pen communities. The TWSBI 580 is a reliable piston refiller featuring interchangeable nibs. TWSBI offers the 580 in anodized aluminum or nickel trim. Lamy Studio can be purchased here. The “next step” up in Lamy pens after the Safari and the AL-Star. Although I enjoy the metal section, others might not like it. Pens that are too tightly gripped may feel slippery. Lamy Studio has been a top pick on my recommendation pens list for the past few years. It now ranks No. The Lamy Studio is ranked 2 in my “Best Pens Under 100 Dollars” category. This position will be reaffirmed later on if you add one of the 14k nibs by Lamy. TWSBI Diamond Mini can be purchased here TWSBI’s smaller piston refiller is great for pocket pen. The TWSBI Diamond Mini, which posts to the same place as the TWSBI Diamond Mini, can also double up as your daily driver. Order Opus 88 Even though it took me a while to reach this point, Opus 88’s Japanese style eyedropper pens are now in the “Top Five” category. Not only do these pens have massive ink capacity, but they now come in a wider range of sizes. The larger pen, such as those in the Omar’s series, holds enough ink to last for many weeks. But even smaller ones like the “Koloro”, and the “Picnic,” which are both less than $100, can still store a significant amount. ( Purchase here PenBBS 456 Vacuum Filler.
Steel Nibs: Best First Fountain Pen Above $100
People have an expectation that fountain pens should be worth $100 if they are priced above that price. This was my view when I first started this hobby. Over the last few years my opinions have changed. I finally see this as a mistake. Sailor and German firms make very high quality nibs made of steel that are almost as good or better than gold.
. Faber-Castell fountain pen are among the top bargains available in this market. The Ambition pen, which can be written in exceptional quality and comes with a range of custom designs including barrels from exotic woods, is just over $100. (Buy here) If the Ambition seems too slim, you might want to consider the E-Motion. It is a heavier and more substantial pen, yet it still maintains exceptional balance post- or unposting. The E-Motion’s “Pure Black”, which I have recently reviewed, is another favorite of mine. Even though it is slightly more expensive, the Pure Black version has a comfortable texture barrel. ( Purchase here Leonardo Momento Zero Leonardo Furore . Leonardo Officina Italiana emerged out of the wreckage of Delta Pens, and can now offer $150-300 unique pens made from recycled celluloid. Leonardo Pens in Omas Vintage Celluloid are available for purchase. This is possible for an additional cost, however, so keep your eyes open. Both Leonardo’s main models, the Momento Zero (and the Furore) have received rave reviews. While the Momento Zero is my personal favorite, the Furore is also excellent and has a slightly different aesthetic. All functions are the same. ( Purchase here Franklin Christoph Model 20 Model 02 . Which cap you decide to go with will be determined by your preference and style preferences. Franklin-Christoph offers many nib options including some customized stub and italic grinders. ( Purchase here Esterbrook “Estie”.
Kenro’s rebirth of Esterbrook shows the correct way to rebuild a legacy brand. These pens are excellent quality, despite some initial complaints about their price. Esterbrook understands that the Estie is a popular pen and has expanded the product line to include Diamondcast. From now on, the nib will come in unique grinds by Gena Salino (Custom Nib Studio). You can also purchase an Estie in oversize at a slightly higher cost. ( Purchase here Pelikan Tradition 200/M205 . The entry-level Pelikan piston-filler is not included in this listing. Pelikan nibs may be swapped, which allows you to choose to have a more expensive nib. Keep an eye out for M205 special edition demonstrators, available in many colors. Cleo Scribent is a German small-brand that makes high quality pens. It can only be found outside Europe.
Otto Hutt from Germany is another maker, although it is not as well known. However, they have gained new distribution in America and are expanding their product range. Finally, don’t forget old standby Waterman , which recently revitalized their “Expert” line of pens and appears to be preparing to release some new designs.
Best Fountain Pens For Beginners“>best fountain pens to get your writing done. It’s a rewarding experience, starting with the purchase and packing it up all the way to first using it. You should also consider buying a premium fountain pen to ensure years of use.
Parker is one of the go-to brands when it comes to fountain pens, but there’s actually a thriving marketplace out there with numerous manufacturers to choose from. This means that you will find fountain pens that suit your style and that are ergonomically designed to work with any hand.
The Swiss-made Caran d’Ache Ecridor takes our top spot for its immediate wow factor, amazing handling and characteristically Teutonic attention to detail, but if you’re looking closer to home, we recommend getting your hands on the special Kingsman edition of Conway Stewart’s Churchill pen.

You can learn more about how we review fountain pens. They are elegant and make a bold statement. The art of writing with one pen is something that’s considered artistic. This is all very well. However, most people do not realize that fountain pens can be used for a variety of purposes. Touching the nib against the paper will cause ink to flow more or less to this point. Although this is much easier with the hands, the pen must be properly angled to achieve the desired effect.
Certain fountain pens do better than others at certain tasks. These are just a few of the many options available to help you choose one that best suits your needs.

Top 5 Fountain Pen Ink Brands
Robert Oster- I’m not sure of any ink brand that I could recommend to everyone without caveats. They may even be the best. They have great colors, great performance, great price, and even great shimmer! They are doing all of the right things. (Buy ). (Disclosure. Robert Oster produces the Pen Addict pen ink I sell. Sailor: Speaking of doing right, Sailor went through a time when I worried about their ink line-ups. Their inks became so expensive that it was not worth the extra cost. I used to love Robert Oster’s comments about them. The Manyo series’ recent release has saved them. Iroshizuku, Buy Pilot – Iroshizuku went from premium to standard in price and even cheaper for the quality of their fountain pen inks. Although they rarely bring new colors to the market, when their base options are so good, is it really necessary? ( Buy P.W. Akkerman. Copy/paste all that I’ve said above about Iroshizuku to this section. Only difference between the standard and premium bottles is that they contain more ink, 60 ml in comparison to 50 ml. This ink bottle has the best design ink available. Montblanc Standard Inks – This is a great value. Although they may not want it to be known, it is true. Their special editions are more on the pricey side, but are unique enough to command respect. ( Buy (Notes: If any list on this page deserves to be expanded to 10 entries, it’s this one. Classics such as Diamine, Faber-Castell, Pelikan, and Rohrer & Klingner all make great inks, as do relative newcomers such as Colorverse and Vinta. This is a great time to be an ink enthusiast. Things To Consider Before You Choose A Fountain Pen
Before you buy fountain pen, you must know some basics. Here are a few things to consider:
Nib is where the ink escapes from the pen’s end. You can find them in a variety of sizes including extra-fine and fine nibs, as well as medium or large ones. One person might be more precise using an ultra-fine nib. Others prefer wider nibs that are easier to work with. Your writing style will help you decide the right size.
Refilling mechanism: You refill the ink in a fountain pen, and there are quite a few different mechanisms for doing so. There are two types of refilling mechanism: The piston-filler is the one that you put in an ink jar and then use, or it can be a cartridge. Note that you can use an ink-converter on a cartridge pen so you can also dip it in jarred ink, but you usually have to buy that separately. For those pens that include converters, or who recommend specific models to use it for this purpose, please see the following.
Material: This largely depends on your preference. While some prefer something more smooth and sleek, others may want something with better grip. Either way, your pen should be comfortable for you to use and made of a material that’s worth the price you pay for it.
